The wrong and the right way to do link building with your website
This week I’ve had two emails from the same woman asking me to link to her client’s websites. Her first mistake was it was a really long email that I ended up skim reading. Second mistake was that the sites she wanted me to link to had nothing to do with my area (the web). Yet the biggest mistake was not putting a link to my site to start with. Oh, and emailing me again about another site after I had ignored the first email was a really dumb thing to do.
By far the best way to get links is to put a link to their site first. But please make sure the two sites are complementary in some way (for example if you make wedding dresses then swap links with wedding photographers – yip – what works in the real world works in the online world). Get the link in first, write a very short email telling them you’ve added their site to yours, and politely suggest they might like to link back to you.
And guess what? This method actually works
