Full size image restriction in WordPress

Last night I upgraded www.christchurchdailyphoto.com to WordPress 2.5. It upgraded with no issues, and took probably 15 minutes from start to finish. I’m really liking the fresh new interface and was also excited about the media library and improved image upload.

So I thought I was going a little mad this evening when I tried to upload a new image to the Photo Blog and no matter how often I tried I could not get the graphic to go to full size (640 x 480). I use a special photo-blogging theme which has been specifically designed to fit 640 graphics. In fact, my blog would lose its visual impact if the graphics were any smaller.

Convinced I wasn’t doing anything wrong, and had not lost my mind, nor accidentally resized the graphic myself, I did a quick search in Google to see if anyone else has experienced this issue.

And bingo! yes, they have. It appears that a maximum image width has been build into WordPress. Ok, this is a little ‘nanny state’ by my thinking. I’m a big girl and I won’t break my theme I promise. Fortunately, I found two solutions posted at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/164667 – the one I chose and which worked a treat, was to edit the media.php file in the includes directory so the maximum width was set to 640.
