A new Facebook Plugin for WordPress

Getting some integration between your WordPress website and Facebook page has til now been something of a mission. Blog publishers have had to use a 3rd party RSS application to get their blog content imported into Facebook and these have not always been easy to set up or entirely reliable.

Finally, fingers crossed, there is a new solution that will not only allow bloggers to publish content from their blog to their Facebook page, but will also integrate Facebook commenting onto the blog as well as a number of other features.

The plugin that does this was released today and was developed by Facebook engineers. I’m currently testing the plugin to see how it all works, and will report back on this blog with my findings.

To find out more go to https://developers.facebook.com/wordpress/ and to download the plugin go to WordPress’s plugin directory.

So far only 4,575 users have downloaded the plugin from the directory – that’s how new it is. Will be interesting to see how quickly word spreads out there!

Update

After publishing this blog post I wanted to see if my Facebook page was updated. It was.

So far I’ve only enabled the Social Publisher feature of this plugin as I’ve discovered over the years it’s always best to test one thing at a time. This post has been successfully published to my Web Matters Facebook page – it adds a summary and a link back to the full blog post. So it does not appear to create a note on Facebook.

However, I did get some PHP errors after publishing the post – even though everything appears to be working.

Update: I’ve since published another blog post – also got PHP errors and the post has not shown up on my Facebook page. Not a great experience so far.
